MIRANSHAH: A senior military officer on Wednesday said that restoration of peace and carrying out development work were the top priorities after the completion of the military operation Zarb-i-Azb in North Waziristan Agency.
This was stated by the General Officer Commanding Major General Sardar Asghar Hayat during a jirga held with the tribal elders of North Waziristan here. Political Agent North Waziristan Kamran Afridi, Member National Assembly Muhammad Munir, a large number of tribal elders and other civil and military officials were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Major General Sardar Asghar Hayat said that the rehabilitation of the damaged infrastructure and provision of basic amenities to the tribesmen of the area was the utmost priority of the government and the armed forces.
He said that the projects to provide clean drinking water to the residents were launched and damaged roads, school buildings and health centres were being rebuilt.He said that the demolished markets would be rebuilt and given to the owners. He said provision of electricity, solution of the problems being faced by the tribesmen at checkposts, setting up of the Ghulam Khan Trade Terminal and construction of a cadet college in North Waziristan was his heart’s desire.
He said that North Waziristan was rich in minerals and would bring development and prosperity to the area once extracted. He said that there were vast orchards of dates and pines in the area and setting up of a processing plant was also part of a plan for the area.
Apart from this, the GOC said that the government was also planning to construct an effective irrigation system and promote poultry farming in North Waziristan.He said that the returning farmers were provided seeds of various crops to promote agriculture there. He urged the tribal elders to support the political administration and security forces in maintaining peace by ensuring that no anti-social elements entered their areas.
