ISLAMABAD: Agricultural experts, who arrived from 30 countries of the world, have emphasised the need for using efficient irrigation technologies to conserve water and produce more crops for tackling the increasing food demand.

Speaking at the 3rd day of the 75th plenary meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee, they said inefficient use of water was reducing the groundwater level and available water resources were facing immense pressure due to increasing population across the globe.

Speaking on the occasion, WWF Pakistan Representative Arif H Makhdum said the agri-sector and cotton crop was consuming about 95% of fresh water in the country. He informed the audience that about 56 million cubic feet of water was diverted to the Punjab irrigation system and about 11 million acre feet in canals was wasted due to inefficiencies.
